I can confidently predict that in the future... people will wonder why it took us so long to replicate something we were able to do in 1973... with a car from 1959. An Opel no less.

What gets me is that there are currently existing technologies, like that Opal, that, if properly combined, would allow for far more efficient transportation options than the ones we have now (no, I am not talking about Socieurotanian mass transit).
Unfortunately, any of those transportation options require Americans specifically to change the way they think about transporting themselves. Transportation can no longer be held as a social status symbol if one wants to do it cheaply, cleanly, and efficiently.
Until that notion changes, it doesn't matter what works better.
PS: For the record, I am extremely interested in working with anyone who is even remotely interested in exploring the feasibility of developing some of those technologies at an entrepreneurial level. I have several ideas worth exploring. Interested parties should contact me at dlhitzeman at hitzeman dot com.
Having travelled extensively in countries where one's means of transportation is NOT reflective of one's status (at least, for people of the level with whom I associate), I can say that I certainly believe that Denny's assessment is correct.
